Kanazawa Japan Travel
In this post, I share some of my favorite things I did in Kanazawa, the restaurants I enjoyed, and my thoughts on how to get from Tokyo to Kyoto, the path I followed. When most people ask about traditional cities in Japan, they think of Kyoto first, but in some areas Kyoto is actually outshone by lesser-known alternatives such as Osaka and Tokyo. Since I had little time on my first trip to Japan, I can say that I preferred Osaka to Tokyo, as both are sprawling modern cities. I designed my Kanzawa route in such a way that when I was asked what I thought of Japan's "traditional cities," most people thought of Kyoto first.
In addition to its samurai heritage, the city, which is the only Japanese city besides Kyoto where the old-style geisha training is still held, also boasts the largest Higashi Chayabe system in the country and is considered one of the best places to learn about the history of the samurai. Kanazawa is located in the center of Japan, on the western border of Japan with China and the United States, and on the western edge of Tokyo, just a few kilometers from downtown.
The modern city is home to one of the best gardens in the country and is particularly beautiful when you enjoy the cherry blossoms. The newly developed Shinkansen Line allows you to reach Kanazawa in less than an hour by train from Tokyo or by bus from Osaka. In addition, travelers from outside Japan can spend a day or two in Hokuriku and use it as a stopover on their way to Hiroshima, which you can visit on the way back to Tokyo or from the US or the United States.
There are also trains that run only from Nagano to Tokyo, but if you don't plan ahead, you can change trains at Ueno Station in Tokyo to Kanazawa. From Tokyo, you will need to change trains and board a JR Tokyo Shinkansen Line train that arrives at Uenos Station and then board the JR Kanzawa Station.
If you are in the Kansai region, the fastest way to get to Kanazawa, Japan is via the Shin - Osaka - Kyoto stations. The journey time from Tokyo to Kanazava is about 2 hours and 15 minutes, or about 1 hour and 40 minutes if you are coming from the Kansa area (Osaka, Kyoto and Nara). For $130, you can take the Thunderbird Express to Kyoto and then take the Kyoto-to-Kanzawa Express for a total of two and a half hours, one of the faster routes there.
I recommend to experience the ryokan (onsen) for 1 - 2 nights, but how long you can spend it is up to you. You can visit the Peace Memorial Museum on Miyajima Island on a day trip from Tokyo. You can visit it in total 2-3 hours or about 1 hour and 15 minutes if you are coming from the Kansa area (Osaka, Kyoto and Nara).
I strongly recommend you stay in Kanazawa and buy a Japanese railway pass, which will save you a lot of money if you want to travel to Japan. Just travel all the way from Nagano to Tokyo or Kyoto by train and with a Japan Rail Pass you can save a lot of time and money when travelling in Japan!
The Thunderbird Sandabado Limited Express runs hourly from Kanazawa to Kyoto (Y = 6,900) and from there to Nagano with a stop at the South Railway Station. The Kansai express trains run every half hour from Kyoto to Tokyo (S = 5,500) with a stop in Kanzawa (T = 3,800).
Buses to Kyoto or Osaka depart from Y = 3,000 for buses on the Tokyo - o - Kanazawa route. The average is Y = 3,500 for the Kansai express train from Kyoto to Nagano (T = 4,800)
Kanazawa is a great destination for those who want to experience traditional Japan, but like the rest of Japan, the weather can affect their travel experience. It is one of the most popular destinations in Japan for traditional travel and is an ideal place to experience it in the summer months, especially in winter.
